When you arrive ask a local Londoner to say Marylebone. The quaint way they pronounce areas names adds a wonderful indescribable quality to London. The village of Marylebone is between Oxford Street, Regent's Park, Edgware Road and Portland Place. Do not miss Marylebone Station. That great representative of Great Britain overseas, the BBC, is here. One of the district's principal and popular attractions is Madame Tussaud's.
Let us go back to the name. One thing first: it has no relation to any French translation, and suggesting such a fact could get you into trouble with the locals. Anyhow, there was once a church called St. Mary's located near the river Tybourne in the Manor of Tyburn, which used to be near present day Oxford Street. It was infamous for its gallows until the XVIIIth Century. The combination of St. Mary's and bourne became Marylebone over time. King Henry VIII took the building and its land, but sold some of it. What he kept became known as Marylebone Park.

The presence of two wealthy families, Portman and Portland, brought respectability with opportunity close behind, as small merchants and musicians followed them. Beginning in 1818, John Nash, a famous English architect, redesigned much of the area around Marylebone Park by adding a few villas. The result was Regent's Park. The last major addition was Marylebone Station in 1899, which has had a rocky existence, but its presence is now totally secured thanks to private investment. The village of Marylebone was one of three original pieces that became the City of Westminster in 1965.
There is a lot to do here, such as the Wallace Collection with its Rembrandt's and Delacroix's, the Wigmore Hall with its beautiful chamber music performances and the Open-Air Theatre. Take a walk along Marylebone High Street and stop in some of its shops. Cavendish Square and Portland Place are just some of its renowned areas. Fiction blends with reality when you realize who has called Marylebone home, namely Sherlock Holmes on Baker Street, H.G. Wells, John Lennon and Ringo Starr.
