The London village of Paddingtonis located in the borough of the City of Westminster. It is principally famous for the main line station servicing parts of the west and south-west of the country. Many passengers arriving from Heathrow airport and wanting to get very quickly into London use Paddington Station. But, there is a lot more going on. Pubs, bars, restaurants combine to create a lively scene.
Much of present-day London includes small villages and cities that were absorbed over time as the city continuously expanded. Paddington was one such case. The name probably comes from a settlement called Padintune or Padda's tun, which meant a farm belonging to Padda, a local Anglo-Saxon chieftain. It began as a small agricultural village until King Edgar gave it to the Abbey of Westminster sometime between 960 and 975, where it stayed until King Henry VIII appropriated the lands of the monasteries and redistributed them. His son, King Edward VI, reversed some of his father's actions and gave Paddington to the city of London in the early 1550s. Principal residential development was in Paddington Green and along Edgware Road.

The centrepiece of Paddington is its station. It began as the original terminus for the first line of the Great Western Railway linking London to Taplow in 1838, which included the construction of new bridges, stations and tunnels. The leading engineer was Isambard Brunel. Beginning in the early 1840s, he began building a new grander station nearby that had a glazed roof supported by wrought iron arches in three spans, but a fourth span was added between 1906 and 1915. The immense height is due to the need to hold the massive steam train engines. Queen Victoria's first train journey was to Paddington station in 1842. The new station opened its doors in 1854 making the original site a goods yard, which lay abandoned for decades. Thankfully, a breath of urban renewal has arrived in the form of Paddington Waterside, which includes residences, shops, restaurants and parks. Look out for the display case containing Paddington Bear, a children's fictional character discovered in the station.
Stop by St. Mary's Hospital, Paddington Bridge and Paddington Basin for a bit of medical and engineering history. The former produced Alexander Fleming, the inventor of penicillin. The village gave its name to one of the commonly songs taught to English children from 1864 to 1980 is Pretty Polly Perkins of Paddington Green. Fame has come through here in the names of Emma Thompson, Elvis Costello and Les Ferdinand.
