Tower Hamlets has taken its name from the nearby Tower Bridge and the relation to the olde English Hamlets that used to surround it. It is located to the East of the City of London, which is where the nickname of East End comes from. It is one of the designated boroughs of London for the 2012 Olympic games. It has areas of extreme contrast within it. The old docks of Millwall, where the SS Great Eastern was launched, is a poor area. Whereas, the affluence of the renovated Docklands and Canary Wharf areas is all to plain to see. New buildings full of bushiness offices scrape the skys here. Areas inside the London Borough of Tower Hamlets include:

  • Ratcliff E1
  • Shadwell E1
  • Spitalfields E1

Parts of this brough are easily recognized from the title sequence of the BBC soap opera East Enders. As the camera moves out you can see a large U shape in the river Thames. The area surrounded by the river used to be an island. Today called the Isle of Dogs. The borough streches east, west and north from the extream tip of the U bend. All of it is to the North of the river Thames.
